TED assignment

“What’s wrong about what we eat” Mark Bittman
Bittman says that 30% of the earth is covered by animals that will be eaten, this is a little disgusting to me, but hearing that 10 billion animals are killed every year only in the U.S is outrageous, how can we consume so much meat? He also enfasizes that lifestyle diseases are more prevalent in our country and this is a consequence of our diet. I was shocked to hear that livestock is the second higest contributor to atmosphere altering gases! It makes me sad that this information is not really said to the public, the government should do something about it, and fast.

“School lunches” Ann Copper
Even though we read Fast food Nation and Schlosser  informed us of the kind of food that is served in school cafeterias it is still upsetting to hear it again. Ann Copper has a solution to this problem it is called “Sustainable food” plant, grow, and consume our own food. It was also disturbing to hear that the government spends more money on prisoners per year than they do in school lunch programs, they only focus on the money and do not think about the health of the children; if their diets are not controlled Copper believes that human beings will extinct.  Copper is doing an amazing job in her sustainable program she is not only feeding the kids healthy meals, but she is also teaching them how to grow vegetables, and how to cook. We need more people like Ann Copper in this world! I will be using Copper’s speech in my research paper the part where she talks about how the heavy marketing affects our addiction to fast and unhealthy food.

“Teach every child about food” Jamie Oliver
It was sad to see the video of Oliver in a school where the children did not know the difference between a carrot and celery. Oliver like Bittman, and Copper  agrees that if nothing done children will live 10 years less than their parents, this is sad and scary, I really want to change my eating habits I want to have healthy kids. Oliver’s how to make a difference list is very interesting and I’m sure we would all benefit from it –Supermarkets need a food expert to help the shoppers –Food education should be a priority  -Kids need to be fed fresh food, and should be taught how to cook.

I am blessed

Every person that has been part of my life in one way or another has made me who I am today, but since I can only mention three people that have been and still are important in my life. I chose my dad, my sister Gaby, and my great grandmother.
Carlos Medina that is my dad’s name, he has a very serious face he always looks like he is mad, but he never is he said that he began making that face when I started dating; he wanted to scare the boys away. The reason I chose my dad is because he is the most helpful person I know, he will do anything for anyone you just have to ask.  He has been a great example “always lend a hand and never stop smiling” those are his words, and even though there has been times when I have said what a mean dad I have the older I grow the more I realize that everything he has done is for my own good.
My sister Gaby is a beautiful 19 year old, she has won a couple of beauty contest, but she is not just beautiful she is also very smart, she is attending medical school, she wants to be a neurosurgeon. Being the older sister I have always felt that my responsibility is to take care of my younger siblings, but with Gaby things are different she is very independent, and such a responsible young lady, I am so proud of her.
And last but not least is my great grandmother Isabel we call her Isa, she is a tiny  woman that is full of life, she is always laughing, singing and trying to dance in her wheel chair. She always has a funny comment and something nice to say to everyone. My grandma inspires me, and when I’m feeling sad or moody I remember that old lady full of life and smile.

Reviewing Facebook

Facebook is a social network where you can keep in touch with friends and family, you can post pictures of a recent vacation or pictures of the new member of the family, it is also used to speak up and let everyone know your opinion on certain things.

It is very easy to obtain a facebook account you just have to register by entering some personal information like your name, and email address. It also asks for phone number, current city, your work place, but these are optional, and in my personal opinion not recommended. You have the option to make your account open to the public so anyone can see it or you can make it private so only the people you are friends with can see your posts, pictures, and videos.

I like this website because it allows me to stay in contact with friends and family members that I had lost contact, because I had moved or because of our busy schedules for example I have so much more communication now with my cousin Veronica she joined the army years ago and last year she was in Iraq, my cousins and I were able to keep in touch with her, and have the reassurance that she was OK. I have found high school friends that I haven’t seen in years thanks to this website I’ve learned that some are married some are engaged and most of them are parents.

But like everything facebook has its bad things too. Some people post too much information and that has led to robberies or in one case where a young girl met a man through this network and invited him to visit her without really knowing this person, she was found dead and security videos confirmed that the last person in her home was that person that she had met through facebook.

It is always fun to find that friend you haven’t seen in years and catch up, my only recommendation is do not post too much information, and only approve people you know.

No more Fast food!

Before reading Fast Food Nation I ate fast food three to four times a week.  When I began reading the book I stopped eating fast food as often I would usually think twice before stopping at McDonald’s and ordering a big Mac on my way home from work. When I got to the slaughterhouses chapter I just stopped eating fast food, because I was disgusted I couldn’t believe that there were no regulations and how dirty these places were.  When I got to the chapter that describes e-coli, Salmonella, and other deadly bacteria’s that are found in ground beef and chicken, I became afraid of fast food; the simple thought that my food may be contaminated with e-coli of other bacteria’s scares me and disgusts me.I haven’t had ground beef or chicken in a while, this is rare to me because I am used to chicken sandwiches and burgers.
I am glad I had the opportunity to read this book and learned that fast food not only make my pants not fit, but also can lead to severe diseases.
I don’t think I will be eating at fast food restaurants anymore, I am sticking to a healthier diet, I am actually trying out some of the recipes from my “Everyday” magazine that I get monthly and have never ever tried because I was too lazy to cook or I should say try to cook.

The truth

The majority of you figured out the truth! I had a cow as a pet for a little over a year; she lived in my garage. My dad had to give her away when she grew up.

My semester has been a little tough. I had to drop a class because I felt overwhelmed at the beginning of the semester due to all the assignments, but I gotten the hang of it now, and so far I can say my semester is going great.
When I dropped my Intro to Education class in September, I was a little upset. I didn’t want to drop the class but I knew I had to if I wanted to get good grades and be able to do all my assignments properly and on time. Having to drop a class because I didn’t have the time to do my assignments that frustrated me, I felt disappointed. So I began to look for a solution. I realized I had to work less in order to focus more in school, but how could I do that if I had so many bills to pay. A good friend told me you need to get out of your apartment, so you can pay less rent; I had never thought about this what a great idea, but where am I going to live? Many friends offered their homes, which I appreciate so much, but I am so used to living alone that I wasn’t sure I would be able to live with other people. I found the cutest studio in a great neighborhood I will be moving next month! I spoke with my boss and explained my situation, she has given me the opportunity of working less hours, so I can take more classes and finish with school soon.
It’s very easy to lose focus I stay motivated by reminding myself the reasons why I am doing this, to help children improve their lives and become successful individuals. My family and friends have always supported me, they are the ones that keep me going.

SMILE ^_^

This are my favorite lyrics enjoy!

SMILE
by Nat King Cole

Smile though your heart is aching
Smile even though it's breaking
When there are clouds in the sky, you'll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You'll see the sun come shining through for you

Light up your face with gladness

Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use of crying?
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile

That's the time you must keep on trying

Smile, what's the use of crying?
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile
